Communities in Flux: The Impact of Economic Turmoil and Shifting Demographics

  • Fellowships and Training
  • November 16, 2008 TO November 18, 2008
  • Chicago, IL

This two-day seminar gave fresh insight on changing communities and how new challenges affect audiences. Fellows examined under-the-radar story ideas, learned from leading experts in the field and fellow journalists, and left with a notebook of new sources.

Sessions included:

Tipping Points: Life after Election '08: What trends should journalists track as newly elected leaders take on critical social issues?

The Rise of the Working Poor: For many middle-income households, having a job doesn't mean economic security. What does the future hold for families on the edge?

Where Communities Clash:
Diverse populations increasingly compete for jobs, loans, school funding and even public recreational space. As poverty among children and immigrant populations grows, according to new census findings, where can reporters find the pressure points and illuminate the policies behind the struggles?

Solutions From Within: A look at vetted public and private programs that use innovative means to help people and communities under stress.

Skills Workshops:
Breakout sessions on reporting challenges and multimedia skills.
