Home visiting programs provide in-home support to individuals considered vulnerable or at risk, including low-income expecting parents, teens and those with disabilities. Such programs can help fill unmet needs and lead to improved maternal and child health outcomes, positive parenting, safe homes and connections to integrated assistance. In the United States, families can choose to purchase such support services if they can afford them, but most simply go without.
This brief reviews the existing home visiting programs in the United States. It examines poverty’s effects on mothers and young children, why home visiting programs are a good investment, and how policymakers and stakeholders can craft effective programs for vulnerable families.
