The report compiles the latest information on the health and welfare of U.S. children, including statistics on child abuse and neglect, foster care, adoption, kinship support, child care, Head Start, child poverty and income support, substance abuse, juvenile justice, children’s mental health and the child welfare workforce. Its individual state fact sheets provide descriptive information on the condition of vulnerable children in all states and the District of Columbia.

The national report finds that nearly one-fifth, or 19 percent, of American children are living in poverty, up from 16 percent in 2000. The report also notes a reduction in child abuse and neglect as well as a decrease in the number of children in foster care.

The report was produced by the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA), the nation’s oldest and largest membership-based child welfare organization. Data was compiled from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Adoption and Foster Care Analysis Reporting System, National Center for Children in Poverty, U.S. Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Association of Counties and The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count Report.
