The Obama administration proposed a $49.7 billion budget for education programs, an increase from $46.2 billion in fiscal year 2010. The issue brief overviews the President's education budget request, released on Monday, February 1, 2010.

The brief, produced by the New America Foundation's Federal Education Budget Project, summarizes and analyzes special education grants, Race to the Top, student loans, Pell Grants and other key K-12 and higher education programs included in the budget. Congress will use the budget request to inform its consideration of tax and spending legislation later this year, including the fiscal year 2011 appropriations bill that will set specific funding levels for federal education programs.

The New America Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that "invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States."
