The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 21st annual KIDS COUNT Data Book provides access to national and state indicators of child well-being. The project, which includes an accompanying KIDS COUNT Data Center website and other resources, aims to secure better futures for all children by providing policymakers and citizens with benchmarks for child well-being.

The report reveals that the rate of children living in poverty in 2008 was 18 percent, indicating that 1 million more children were living in poverty in 2008 than in 2000. Experts project that the most up-to-date census data will show child poverty surging beyond 20 percent.

The KIDS COUNT Data Center offers hundreds of additional child well-being indicators at the state, city and community level. Data on the website are constantly updated and can be ranked, mapped and graphed. Other resources that accompany the report include a mobile website for smartphones, a customizable data widget for personal websites and an archived webinar where Casey Foundation experts discuss their findings.
