According to new analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, an estimated 340,000 of the 4.3 million babies born in the United States in 2008 were the children of unauthorized immigrants.
The analysis, conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, examines the family structure and parenting status of unauthorized immigrants. The report reveals that the children of unauthorized immigrants comprise 8 percent of the newborn population. Unauthorized immigrants make up slightly more than 4 percent of the U.S. adult population. Nearly 79 percent of the 5.1 children of unauthorized immigrants were born in the U.S.
The report was released in August 2010. The data are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s March 2009 Current Population Survey.
