The number of international students enrolled in the United States and the number of American students traveling abroad both reached record-highs in the 2008-2009 academic year. Findings suggest that international student enrollment reached 8 percent that school year -- the highest since the 1980-1981 school year -- and four times as many U.S. students participated in study abroad than in 1987-1988.

According to thee study, these numbers reflect a strong commitment to the value of an international academic experience in preparation for living and working in a more global society. But the study also found signs that the increases may not be replicated next year due to the worldwide economic downturn, which was not fully reflected in data for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The “Open Doors” report, published annually by the Institute of International Education (IIE), analyzes on enrollments in academic year 2008-2009 based on a comprehensive survey of approximately 3,000 accredited U.S higher education institutions.
