Nearly 20 percent of U.S. households lacked enough money to buy food at some point during the past 12 months. Using data collected by Gallup, Food Hardship: A Closer Look at Hunger analyzes food hardship -- the inability to afford enough food -- through December 2009 at the national, state, metropolitan, and congressional district level. The authors says this report is the first ever to analyze food hardship for metropolitan areas and congressional districts. The report finds that in 45 states in 2009, more than 15 percent of respondents experienced food hardship. The report includes several recommendations to reduce food hardship and achieve President Obama's goal of ending childhood hunger by 2015, ranging from increasing wages to strengthening federal nutrition programs.
