The study, which analyzed 49 New York City charter schools through the 2003-2004 and to 2008-2009 academic years, finds that charter schools in New York City are demonstrating significantly better results for students in reading and math than their traditional public school counterparts.

Overall, researchers found that charter schools scored about five scale score points higher in math and two points higher in reading than students in district schools. Black and Hispanic students had higher test scores than peers in district schools, but students who were not fluent in English and special education students in charter schools did not perform differently than those in district schools.

The report, which was commissioned at the request of the New York City Department of Education, was released by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO). Research was conducted by an education research group at Stanford University.
