The Federal Education Budget Project, hosted by the New America Foundation, analyzes the financing, quality and cost-effectiveness of federal initiatives that are directed toward education.

The fiscal year 2009 federal budget totaled $4.1 trillion. Most federal education programs are funded through discretionary funding that must go through an annual appropriations process. In 2009, discretionary federal education funding totaled $152.8 billion. The Federal Education Budget Project explains how the federal budget process works and describes the stake federal, state and local governments have in financing education in the U.S.

The project includes data sets for each state that outline factors like demographics, achievement and funding. Additionally, the recently released Federal Programs for K-12 Teachers page provides information about the size and scope of federal programs that support teacher training and development programs.
