A study of girls between 6 and 8 years old suggests that girls today are more likely to begin puberty early.
According to the study, approximately 10 percent of 7-year-old white girls were developing breasts compared to 5 percent 10 years ago. For young black girls, the first signs of puberty were seen in 25 percent of 7 year olds, also an increase from 10 years ago. The researchers say the rise in early puberty is linked to the rise in obesity in U.S. children. Environment and genetics may also contribute to early maturation.
The researchers cite previous studies and note that early puberty is associated with lower self-esteem and greater rates of depression. Additionally, there is a greater risk for breast cancer and endometrial cancer among girls who matured earlier.
Pediatrics published the study online in August.
